Frequently Asked Questions

Xpnsit is a SaaS (software as a service) application that helps you maximise your personal deductions to get a larger tax refund. With Mark’s helpful hints and guidance, we make it fast and easy to track and log your expenses to maximise your refund at tax time.

Xpnsit is available via the online web application or mobile app through selected mobile devices like IPhone and Blackberry. Full reporting and data export is available to help you or your accountant lodge your tax return quickly and easily without the need for a shoebox full of dockets.

The Australian Tax Office income tax ruling TR 2005/9 rules it OK to use electronic expense and deduction tracking. You can read the actual ruling by clicking here.

Xpnsit helps you collect and manage your expenses and possible deductions for submission to the ATO when lodging your tax return. We would also recommend you seek professional tax advice before lodging a return but Xpnsit helps both you and your advisor track and maintain your potential deductions.

As much as we’d like to all turf out the paperwork, its often not possible. The good news is that Xpnsit will guide you when you need to keep a receipt, docket or invoice and when you can throw them away. Yes, that’s right, you can throw some away and we’ll let you know when.

For the ones to keep, we don’t want your shoe box either. Instead, we can provide an Xpnsit envelope to store all the paperwork for each tax year once you’ve entered in to Xpnsit. No filling, no holding on or passing to the accountant, just stuff them in the envelope just in case the tax department ever asks some questions.

The Xpnsit tax report is all your accountant or tax advisor will need at the end of the year.

Very much so and our Terms and Conditions and Privacy statement explain the details. But in simple terms, we use the latest 128bit encrypted SSL security to keep your information private and secure in transmission.

No we don’t. The estimates in the Tax-Back-Calculator are exactly that, estimates. Using the best information at our disposal and with help from our industry partners, we have put together a guide to help you see what you might expect to get back when using Xpnsit and when claiming your entitlements.

This website is a guide only and is not financial advice. The tax deductions and allowances available will be different for each user and depend on the user’s own circumstances. Users must satisfy themselves that the estimated deductions and/or allowances are appropriate in their particular and individual circumstances. Xpns is not providing financial advice nor does it warrant that this website is entirely free of defects or fit for any specific purpose and Xpns accepts no liability for any errors or omissions and any loss or damages resulting from or connected with its use. Xpns recommends that all users be familiar with the applicable laws and the use of the website and seek financial advice before using the website to submit their tax returns.

Xpnsit works to maximise your personal income expenses and deductions related to work or study or other income producing stuff. You need to speak to your accountant or tax advisor for the other stuff. The good news is that you’ll get even more tax back!

The Tax-Back-Calculator is an estimator or guide that shows what’s possible to claim with suggestions and tips structured around your profession. Using a variety of professions and examples and based on our research and experience, we show you the possible area’s available to claim a deduction. However, you should always contact your accountant or tax advisor for advice or to lodge your tax return.

Xpnsit includes a fully featured motor vehicle usage log book and diary to help you keep track of work and study related expenses and vehicle use. This can also be used to prepare a calendar report with mileage and usage details to help you claim your maximum entitlements.

One of the reasons many personal tax payers don’t get the most tax back is because they rarely claim assets and the related depreciation in their tax return. Unlike a business that typically has an accountant, bookkeeper and comprehensive accounting software that takes care of this (at a cost!), income tax payers either don’t know what’s possible or don’t have the means to track or calculate the various items depreciation rates, “useful life” values or other related items.

Well guess what? Xpnsit does all of the above in the one simple package. You can have a look at an example of the supporting Xpnsit asset table and useful life values we use here.

For example, if a person needs a large screen monitor because they work at home and they use the monitor purely for work, using Xpnsit they can easily claim the depreciation as a deduction as Xpsnit will work out the detail for them. Or if a specific device is required for a person’s work or even personal related study, they need only input the percentage of use that is work related and Xpnsit will work that out too. With Xpnsit, there are no more excuses for not getting the most from one’s return.

Low Value Pool assets are those with a value between $300 to $1000 that can be pooled together using a different depreciation rate. This rate is often more aggressive than what might normally be used allowing a greater rate of depreciation and deduction.

Best to talk to your accountant about the exact implications for you but Xpnsit tracks LVP assets and uses specific rates to suit. Our reporting identifies these items so users always know where they stand.

Definitely not. We work closely with accountants and Xpnsit was actually created by one. Accountants know their clients don’t maximise their refund or claim for various reasons most of which revolve around poor information, record keeping and a lack of understanding.

Some of our accountant colleagues endorse Xpnsit and recommend it to their clients. As one of our people said, “I’m always trying to educate my clients and Xpnsit it does it for me.” So whether it’s your accountant, tax agent, tax advisor or E-tax online, Xpnsit makes it easier to get the information, manage it and present it to get the most back from your tax return.

Not at all. Whilst the ATO has links to a person’s income and investment information, for example through their employer activity summaries, the last time we checked the ATO hasn’t made it a habit to follow people around monitoring their every expense (so no ATO man in the laundry watching you when you wash work clothing, or on the bus travelling with you to attend a course, or even standing next to you when you’re buying a new computer for home study use!).

In simple terms, it’s quite likely that the ATO will have a person’s income details but it’s very unlikely they’ll ever know how each person lives their life and what expenses and deductions they incur. Equally, they won’t know the intricacies of each person’s occupation and what they might do on behalf of their employer, or when they research or maintain their investments.

Our view is that Xpnsit actually enhances the process and makes it easier for individuals to lodge their return, either via an advisor, agent or directly via E-Tax. The ATO code mapping makes it simple. (Refer E-Tax point

Xpnsit is NOT a tax back calculator – it’s a highly tailored personal tax and expense manager. Xpnsit is in a completely new category as never before have these type of financial and expense tracking tools been made available in such a straightforward format to consumers.

Whereas the majority of tax back calculators provide only broad estimates of a person’s potential return based on the individual’s own level of knowledge, Xpnsit goes beyond this. By combining detailed job and industry tax information, Xpnsit provides a highly personalised tool, tailored to each person’s occupation and unique circumstances.

Xpnsit harnesses sophisticated technology, combined with detailed tax information, to provide an easy to use online system for storing, tracking and monitoring expense and work related activities. However, Xpnsit is more than just a product for logging receipts.

A unique feature of the application is its logbook and diary functions which, for the first time, enable users to track and store work related and regular patterns of activity. In the past, individuals would have missed out on claiming these expenses simply because of the difficulty and effort required to monitor and store this data. Xpnsit simplifies this process ensuring that all possible deductions are accounted for and maximising each individual’s tax return.

To use Xpnsit, individuals simply input their basic financial information, expense details, and other regular patterns of activity related to their occupation. For example, weekly dry cleaning or study related travel.

Once the relevant information has been entered, users can track – in real time using the Tax-back-odometer– the estimated value of their tax return for any given period. In most cases, users will actually see the amount of their tax return increasing with each transaction!

Additionally, due to our extensive tax database, users can access highly tailored expense deduction guidance enabling them to identify unique opportunities to claim back tax.

Whereas in the past this type of software would have only been available in an off-line version, using the latest SaaS technology, users have the added benefit of being able to access the Xpnsit database and input additional information from any computer or mobile device with internet connectivity.

Those on lower incomes (currently below $63,750 for 2010) enjoy the benfits of the low income tax offset (LITO). Xpnsit automatically calculates this in your tax back so you get the most accurate picture we can provide.

However, you need to be aware that this could equal up to $1350 of tax back with out any deductions or allowances. We'd like to take the credit for this but you actually need to thank the ATO for giving back this part. For more information check out the ATO Calculation page to see what your status is.

That's an easy one to answer because Xpnsit makes it easier to lodge yourself online using E-tax. Xpnsit stores the ATO tax return codes where possible so you can copy the right information directly into the right box on E-tax.

So for example, if you're asked for "D1 Work-related car expenses" value on E-tax just grab the D1 value from the Xpnsit ITR report, it's that easy. You accountant or tax agent will also find it that much easier to submit your return meaning you'll should get a bigger refund faster.... that means cheaper too.
